ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of the present study is to analyze and evaluate the applicability of bizygomatic and maxillary central incisor width in identifying the sex of an individual for anthropological studies. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on 100 individuals in a private dental institution. The width of the central incisor was measured by requesting the subject to bite onto a sheet of modelling wax. The bizygomatic width was calculated with the help of a divider by taking the most prominent area of the zygomatic arch as the reference point bilaterally. Berry's formula was used to calculate the width of the maxillary central incisor from the bizygomatic width. Berry's Formula "Width of the maxillary central incisor = Bizygomatic width / 16." The data obtained was tabulated and analyzed statistically. Results: The results in our study indicated that the widths of both maxillary central incisors and the bizygomatic width were found to be higher in males when compared to females with a positive strong correlation. Conclusion: The Berry's index can be used for identifying the gender and can also be used for facial reconstruction. (AU)


Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar e avaliar a aplicabilidade da distância bizigomática e espessura de incisivos centrais maxilares na identificação do sexo de um indivíduo para estudos antropológicos. Material e métodos: O estudo foi conduzido com 100 indivíduos de uma instituição odontológica privada. A espessura do incisivo central foi medida pedindo ao sujeito que mordesse em uma folha de cera. A espessura bizigomática foi calculada com o auxílio de uma régua pegando a área mais proeminente do arco zigomático como ponto de referência bilateralmente. A fórmula de Berry foi usada para calcular a espessura do incisivo central maxilar da espessura zigomática. Fórmula de Berry: "Espessura do incisivo central maxial = Espessura bizigomática / 16". Os dados obtidos foram tabulados e analisados estatisticamente. Resultados: Os resultados em nosso estudo indicaram que as espessuras de ambos os incisivos centrais maxilares como as espessuras bizigomáticas foram maiores no sexo masculino do que no sexo feminino, com uma correlação positiva forte. Conclusão: O índice de Berry pode ser usado para identificação de gênero e também pode ser usado para reconstrução facial. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Ideal interaction of dental and facial beauty proportions highly influences a harmonious facial appearance. Racial anatomical variations have been significantly noted and using these norms during prosthodontic rehabilitation will be greatly helpful in successful treatment outcome. Aim: The present study aims to correlate various facial landmarks (interpupillary distance [IPD], intercanthal width, bizygomatic width [BZW], and interalar width) with intercanine distance (ICaD) in Indian young adults to determine the mesiodistal width of the maxillary anterior teeth in edentulous patients. Setting and Design: This is an observational cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in 500 individuals ranging in age from 18 to 28 years. IPD, intercanthal width, BZW, and interalar width were measured with a digital caliper (accuracy - 0.01 mm). A “T-” shaped flat metal plate called “canine tip marker” was made to mark the tips of the maxillary canines, which were further measured with the digital caliper. The data were summarized in table form and were statistically analyzed. Statistical Analysis Used: Student's t-test and ANOVA test were used. Results: A significant correlation (P < 0.001) was found between these landmarks with ICaD, in which interalar width shows highest degree of correlation (r = 0.639). ANOVA test showed that maximum number of individuals had < 5% variability range between actual values and calculated values of ICaD for all extraoral facial landmarks except intercanthal width. Conclusion: Combination of various facial and oral factors should be considered while selecting artificial teeth. Regression equations obtained can be well used during teeth selection to achieve a significant result.

ABSTRACT

This study will examine how differences in measurements between bizygomatic and bigonial arches of the human face can provide relevant information regarding personality and abilities of the subject. Sample: 82 males. Group A: 55 subjects with the bizygomatic arch in contraction. Group B: 27 subjects without the bizygomatic arch in contraction. Subjects performed self-assessment tests in the following areas: ability incorporating themselves into the group, alexithymia and emotional expressiveness. Group A showed greater self-sufficiency and independence than group B, greater difficulty in describing and verbally expressing their emotions, less ability to express themselves emotionally through other forms of communication and reduced willingness to cooperate philanthropically. Results suggest a strong relationship between morphological structure of the bizygomatic arch and certain psychological characteristics.


Este estudio examina cómo la diferencia entre las anchuras del arco bicigomático y bigonial en la cara humana, proporcionan información relevante sobre la personalidad y las habilidades de un sujeto. Muestra: 82 hombres. Grupo A: 55 sujetos con el arco bicigomático en contracción. Grupo B: 27 sujetos con el arco bicigomático sin retracción. Los sujetos realizaron pruebas de autoevaluación en las siguientes áreas: adhesión/independencia al grupo, alexitimia y expresividad emocional. El grupo A mostró respecto al grupo B una mayor autosuficiencia e independencia, mayor dificultad para describir y expresar verbalmente sus emociones, menor capacidad para expresarse emocionalmente a través de diferentes formas de comunicación y reducción de la voluntad de cooperar filantrópicamente. Los resultados sugieren una fuerte relación entre la estructura morfológica del arco bicigomático y ciertas características psicológicas.

ABSTRACT

Background: The description of the human body has been a major concern since ancient times. The use of medical terminology enhances reliability of comparison made between studies from different areas thereby contributing higher level of scientific evidence. Cephalic index is an important parameter in forensic medicine, anthropology and genetics to know the sex and racial differences between individuals. Facial index is useful index for forensic scientists, plastic surgeons and anatomist. The parameters are useful for plastic surgeons during treatment of congenital and traumatic deformities, identification of individuals in medicolegal cases by forensic scientists and identifying craniofacial deformities of genetic syndromes by geneticist. Methods: 170 males and 110 female adults from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India region are included in this study. Anthropometric points for cephalic index were measured by using spreading calipers. Facial index measurements were taken by measuring tape. All measurements were taken in subjects sitting in relaxed condition and subjects head is in anatomical position. Cranial index and facial index were calculated as per the formula. Results: Maximum number of males with mean cephalic index values of 80.21 were observed as mesocephalic and female with mean value of 79.25 observed as brachycephalic. Regarding facial index males were leptoprosopic and females were mesoprosopic. Conclusion: Cephalic index and facial index were terms used by anthropologists, anatomists, plastic surgeons and forensic scientists to identify individual’s race and sex for treatment of craniofacial deformities.
